Rep. Jackson Introduces Bill to Ensure Veterans Get the Benefits They've Earned

WASHINGTON — Congressman Ronny Jackson (TX-13) introduced the Fairness in Veterans’ Education Act to ensure that all service members and veterans receive their full benefits without being inadvertently charged an additional fee. Specifically, this bill would reimburse service members who paid into the Montgomery GI Bill but later used Post 9/11 GI Bill benefits instead while on active duty. The legislation accomplishes this by eliminating an unnecessary requirement that ties compensation to a veteran’s final VA monthly housing payment.
“No service member should be punished simply for pursuing an education while on active duty,” said Rep. Ronny Jackson. “This bill is a necessary step towards restoring fairness to the VA system while supporting our veteran community, aligning with President Trump’s mission to provide top-tier care and support for those who have served this nation.” “As a veteran, I’ll always stand by those who served. This bill makes things right for the 25,000 service members who paid into the Montgomery G.I. Bill before qualifying for the Post-9/11 G.I. Bill,” said Sen. Jim Banks. “These are hard-earned benefits, and the federal government owes these veterans up to $1,200. I want to make sure they get it.” House Veterans’ Affairs Committee Economic Opportunity Subcommittee Chairman Derrick Van Orden (WI-03) is a cosponsor of Congressman Jackson’s bill.
